To play one of the most beloved figures in recent history on the small screen is no easy feat, but when Emma Corrin made her debut as Princess Diana on season four of The Crown, even the biggest royalists couldn’t argue that she did an incredible job. Everything from the Princess of Wales’ voice to facial expressions and mannerisms were perfected, and over the past few days Corrin has been getting the awards nods she deserves from the likes of the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild.
But, despite her standout role, Corrin won’t star in the show’s next season. As it skips ahead through the years each time a season wraps, Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki is stepping into Diana’s shoes, leaving us to wonder – albeit briefly – when we would see Corrin pop up next.
Thankfully, today it was announced that not only is Corrin heading to the big screen, she’s doing so arm in arm with none other than Harry Styles.
The film, My Policeman, is an adaptation of Bethan Roberts‘ LGBTQ+ novel of the same name, set in 1950s Brighton, England. Styles will play the lead, which means that our gender-fluid boy will be playing a queer character on screen for the first time.
The movie follows a schoolteacher named Marion (Corrin) who instantly falls for Tom (Styles) (who wouldn’t). But when Tom meets a museum curator, Patrick, he’s left with a difficult decision about whether to follow his heart, or stay with Marion where it’s safer, during a time when it was illegal to be gay in the UK.
Corrin’s casting comes after it was reported that Lily James was reportedly in negotiations for a female lead role. It’s still unclear who will play Patrick. Of course, a few months ago, Corrin revealed that she’s lucky enough to know her co-star and new on-screen husband, Styles, personally, even leaning on the British musician to dogsit for her once. The friendship is likely due in part to Corrin and Styles sharing a stylist, Harry Lambert, who has successfully catapulted both of them to the top of every best-dressed list.
My Policeman has also been bought by Amazon Studios, which means we could see it heading straight to streaming. No release date has been announced yet.
