Almost every year like clockwork, as soon as the weather starts to warm, a familiar feeling comes with it: that of looking into your wardrobe with confusion as you realise you have nothing – and I mean, nothing! – to wear.

This year, my stress was related mostly to footwear. As I looked at the rows of boots, sneakers and loafers on offer and found not one pair of sandals – or summer-appropriate shoes – I liked.

But thankfully, just because it’s warm out, it doesn’t necessarily mean your toes have to come out, a statement that’s truer this season than most with the rise of the trend of cowboy boots and cute mary janes with socks (an Emma Chamberlain favourite).

In fact, as Emily Ratajkowski proved in Milan, even leather knee-high boots – a fashion girl’s winter staple – have their place in the sun.

In the Italian city for the spring/summer 2023 menswear fashion shows, the model attended the JW Anderson show wearing a one-shoulder black mid-length dress by the British designer (also proving summer looks don’t have to be bright, colourful, nor short), alongside a pair of leather tan knee-high boots, also a JW Anderson creation.

Ratajkowski added a pop of colour in the form of her Bumper bag – a new style by the brand  – in tan and lilac and kept her brunette hair loose.

Black and boots for summer? We love to see it.
