When it comes to Emily Ratajkowski’s style, you can typically expect high-octane glamour like head-to-toe Miu Miu and vintage Dior or lowkey athleisure in sweats and Salomons. But for her latest outing, the model had the best of both worlds.

Traipsing around the streets of New York City, Ratajkowski blended boho-chic and streetwear for a unique summer look. Her dress, from high-streel label Mango, featured an asymmetrical cut, spaghetti straps and embroidered crochet panelling. Adding to the allure of the look, the My Body author added gold jewellery pieces and yellow Jacquemus sunglasses.

Further down, though, her footwear choices threw a spanner in the works with bright red Puma sneakers.

An unexpected choice for the hyperfeminine dress, Ratajkowki’s look demonstrates the power of the ‘wrong shoe’ theory. As coined by Allison Bornstein, this viral dressing hack suggests that any outfit can be levelled up by swapping out the shoes to something antithetical.

This isn’t the first time Ratajkowksi has leaned into this concept. Just the other day, she paired a racer jacket and coordinating trousers with pointed stiletto boots for the Formula 1 Grand Prix of Monaco.

As Bornstein, author of Wear It Well and founder of the ‘Three Word Method’ explains, the idea was inspired by her work helping people try to find their own unique sense of style.

“I’m often problem-solving and trying to help clients figure out how to make a simple look feel interesting or dynamic,” she told an outlet. “I came up with this idea as an easy way to empower clients to try something new and that usually, thinking outside the box will create a look that feels more interesting and less straightforward.”
