Days ahead of an official visit to the United Kingdom, US President Donald Trump has slammed Meghan Markle, calling the Duchess of Sussex “nasty”.
Speaking to British newspaper The Sun, Trump was asked to respond to comments Meghan made about him back in 2016 when he was running for president, describing him as “divisive” and a “misogynist”.
“No, I didn’t know that,” he said. “No, I hope she is OK. So what can I say? No, I didn’t know that she was nasty.”
When asked if it was a good thing to have an American in the British royal family, Trump replied “I think it’s nice and I am sure she’ll do excellently. She’ll be very good. She’ll be very good. I hope she does.”
Meghan will not see Trump during his visit to the UK, since she is on maternity leave with son Archie Harrison. However Queen Elizabeth, Prince Harry and Prince Charles are all expected to meet with the president.
‘Nasty’ is a word Trump favoured when criticising 2016 presidential opponent Hillary Clinton. He called Clinton a ‘nasty woman’ so many times the feminist movement eventually reclaimed the term as a rallying cry.
It’s hard not to see Trump’s choice of the word ‘nasty’ to describe Meghan, who supported Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election, as more than a coincidence.
It’ll be interesting to see how Prince Harry reacts to meeting Trump after this.
