US President Donald Trump has commuted the life sentence of Alice Johnson, after Kim Kardashian met with Trump at the White House to discuss the woman’s case.

Kardashian was the one to call and tell the 63-year-old grandmother, who since 1993 has been serving a life sentence with no possibility for parole for her low-level involvement in a drug ring.

“The phone call I just had with Alice will forever be one of my best memories,” Kim tweeted.

“Telling her for the first time and hearing her screams while crying together is a moment I will never forget.

“So grateful to @realDonaldTrump, Jared Kushner & to everyone who has showed compassion & contributed countless hours to this important moment for Ms. Alice Marie Johnson,” she continued.

“Her commutation is inspirational & gives hope to so many others who are also deserving of a second chance.

Video captured the emotional moment Johnson stepped outside the Alabama prison gates and ran towards her family to be reunited.

In a statement, the White House said:

“Ms Johnson has accepted responsibility for her past behaviour and has been a model prisoner over the past two decades.

“Despite receiving a life sentence, Alice worked hard to rehabilitate herself in prison, and act as a mentor to her fellow inmates.”

In another tweet, Kim revealed she intends to “continue this important work by working together with organisations who have been fighting this fight for much longer than I have and deserve the recognition.”

Kardashian got involved in the case after reading about it on social media.
