Donald Trump – or more likely, his speech writer – might’ve been inspired by Legally Blonde for the US president’s latest speech.
As Jimmy Fallon pointed out on The Tonight Show this week, Trump’s commencement speech at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia on the weekend struck similarities to Reese Witherspoon’s character Elle Wood’s Harvard graduation speech in the movie.
In the movie Elle says “It is with passion, courage of conviction…”, while in his speech Trump said “passion, courage in your convictions…”.
Trump told the students “we must go forth into the world”, which sounds a bit like when Elle said “we take our next steps into the world”.
While Elle said “most importantly, have faith in yourself” Trump chose similar words, telling the crowd “most importantly, be true to yourself.”
And just like Elle squeals “we did it!” at the end of her speech, at the end of Trump’s he said “I did it”, apparently pleased at his own efforts.
Of course it’s probably (hopefully) just a coincidence and not plagiarism by Trump or his speech writer, but it does bring to mind the time Melania Trump was quite obviously ‘inspired’ by one of Michelle Obama’s speeches.
Watch Jimmy Fallon’s comparison of the two speeches and decide for yourself.
