The internet went into meltdown mode over Kylie Jenner’s life-sized lion head look outside of Paris Fashion Week today (it’s faux, don’t worry!), but upon the 25-year-old taking her seat on Schiaparelli’s front row, her wildlife-embellished velvet gown looked almost understated compared to her seatmate, Doja Cat.

Never one to shy away from a fashion moment, instead of opting to wear one of Daniel Roseberry’s animal-influenced designs like Jenner and Naomi Campbell (who wore a wolf-laden coat on the runway), the American singer was almost unrecognisable when she arrived at the house’s Haute Couture show at Petit Palais in Paris laden in over 30,000 Swarovski crystals from head to toe.

In a similar vein to last season, when she covered herself entirely in gold paint, Doja Cat matched the crimson colour of her structured Schiaparelli gown, which featured a red silk faille bustier and a hand-knit skirt of lacquered wooden beads by having celebrity makeup artist Pat McGrath hand apply crystals to her face and body, including her ears, eyelids, and nails.

She finished the look with trompe l’œil toe boots and oversized red and gold earrings, posing outside on the steps in the sun for photographers with her entire body glistening.

Sharing how she managed to create the look on Instagram, McGrath wrote that she covered Doja Cat’s hair in caps, then her skin in paint, before crystals and gold dust were applied to her body.

The entire application took “4 hours and 58 minutes” hand-placing each crystal with her team onto Doja’s skin, McGrath shared on Instagram, writing that Doja demonstrated “sublime patience” during that time. She added, “The final product was a magical, mesmerising masterpiece of sparkling brilliance.”

Roseberry wrote in the collection’s show notes that he was inspired by Dante’s The Divine Comedy, blurring the lines between one’s real body, art and inanimate objects. Sounds like Doja Cat nailed the brief.
