Excuse the America-centric headline for a moment because this is important. An out-of-the-box candidate with “progressive credentials” is how Cynthia Nixon is being described by liberal groups who want her to run as the democratic candidate for the role of New York Governor in 2018.

The former Sex And The City star – who brought us the impermeable lawyer Miranda Hobbes (and Carrie Bradshaw’s voice of reason) – is said to be “considering” throwing her fancy hat in the ring, an opportunity she has declined in the past.

Now, in a new interview, Nixon, 51, is talking the politician talk, and it suits her. “The public school system is so broken in New York State,” Nixon told U.S. Weekly. “We’re 49th in terms of equality in school funding — out of the country, 49th! That’s because of the way schools are funded. They’re funded with property taxes spawned from back room deals, the senators in Albany who have more power get more funding, we have to throw all that out. It’s very complicated, but we have a funding formula that works that out and closes that gap if our state constitution gives us the right to a sound basic education system.”

While analysts are calling her candidacy a long shot, if she does run, she’ll be up against Andrew Cuomo in his bid to nab the top spot for a third year running.
