Ah, The Met Gala. The Olympics of people watching. The debutante into the upper echelons of New York society.
This year, the dress code is “Gilded Glamour”, a homage to those who kept the gilded age golden. Coined by Mark Twain, the “Gilded Age” spans 1870 to 1890 and was a time of great economic and industrial growth in the United Sates. According to Met chairman Tom Ford, “[The era] also proved that America had its own style. It wasn’t just copying Europe”. Cue: fringing, bows, ruffles and lace, and if one woman understood the assignment, it was Cynthia Erivo in Louis Vuitton.
The 35-year-old Tony winner often shuts down a red carpet (remember the BAFTAS? The Venice Film Festival? The SAG Awards?) but tonight, this LV creation won it all, its lace overlay transcending into a cascading feathery train.
See Erivo’s outfit from every angle below. (PS. Those nails are by New York-based artist Gina Oh. If you’re in NYC, hit her up at here or at [email protected].) You can also catch Erivo in Roar, a dark comedic anthology series about the female experience, now streaming on Apple TV+.
