Schiaparelli Haute Couture was a literal beauty disco, complete with sparkle, fringing, and acid brights. If you’re vying to join the party, fear not – MAC Cosmetics senior artist Nicole Thompson worked on the show, and now, she’s armed us with all the know-how necessary to copy the main event: the glitter lip.

For this one in particular, wallflowers need not apply. It’s high maintenance, high impact and high risk, depending on your evening plans. But with a few tricks, it’s manageable. According to Thompson, the first step is to line and sculpt, overdrawing the lip slightly so you’ve got a generous surface area to work with. It’ll also create a bit of a waxy barrier to keep the glitter relatively contained. Use a colour that aligns with your lipstick of choice. A great tip from Thompson is to sub in eyeliner if you’re going for black – it will work just as well.

Next, Thompson advises a thick coat of lipstick in your desired shade. At Schiaparelli, Candy Yum Yum was used for pink, In The Spirit for black, and Siss for nude (note: Siss isn’t currently available in Australia, so try Shrimpton instead). As far as red goes, Lady Danger is about as good as it gets. Apply generously, before using your finger to press glitter on top. The tack of the lipstick will be enough to keep the glitter mostly in place but bring a little for touch-up’s if you can.

Keep the rest of your face light – dewy, hydrated skin with a lick of foundation if you desire. Lashes are free game. Keep them bare or go heavy on the mascara. Finish with a mist of MAC Prep and Prime Fix +, and you’re quite literally ready to party.
