For a film titled All The Money In The World, ironically producers didn’t really have a spare AUD $13 million to re-shoot Kevin Spacey’s scenes with Christopher Plummer in Rome and The UK. That figure was indeed around a quarter of the film’s budget and so director Ridley Scott called up the cast and crew and asked “What would it cost for you to come back?” According to Scott, most of them said “Nothing.”

Today, however, outrage has spread across the internet as fellow actress Jessica Chastain tweeted All The Money’s top-billed star Michelle Williams was paid just 0.4% of her co-star Mark Wahlberg to re-shoot Spacey’s scenes. Williams allegedly received the minimum wages of an actor in Italy – $80 per day – to Wahlberg’s $2 million.

“I heard for the reshoot she got $80 a day compared to his millions,” Chastain tweeted. “Would anyone like to clarify? I really hope that with everything coming to light, she was paid fairly. She’s a brilliant actress and is wonderful in the film.”

The truth be known though, Williams didn’t want a single cent to re-shoot. As Scott tells it, the actress and single mother felt so strongly about the issue of abuse she even offered to give her salary back.

“When they asked me to reshoot, I said: ‘Absolutely I will do it and if you need the salary back, I will give it to you,” said Williams in a recent interview. “I am angry for the people that [Spacey] hurt; I am angry on their behalf. A movie is less important than a human life, so they are who my heart goes out to because the tyranny of abuse is that it’s always about [the perpetrators]… But sometimes a brick hits you on the head and you are like, ‘Ow. That hurt,’ but I am glad that the thing is falling down.”

While Williams was more than happy to take this proactive approach in the wake of Spacey’s allegations, it’s unclear whether she knew Wahlberg had negotiated such a huge price. But if reports are true, the headline shouldn’t be about gender inequality but should rather read: In light of the unique situation, why did Mark Wahlberg demand a seven figure salary? Why wouldn’t he return for free like everybody else?
