Earlier this month, a fire sparked by a pyrotechnic device used during a gender reveal party kicked off one of the most intense wildfires the state of California has seen yet this season, burning through more than 10,000 acres and resulting in thousands having to evacuate from their homes. The incident prompted the woman who accidentally started the gender reveal party trend, Jenna Karvunidis, to speak out on Twitter saying, “Stop having these stupid parties.… Stop burning things down to tell everyone about your kid’s penis.”

Back in 2008, Karvunidis posted a cake on her mummy blog to reveal whether she was expecting a boy or a girl, cutting into the inside of the cake, revealing either a blue or pink interior. This was, of course, before social media and it’s safe to say, things have escalated dramatically since then. One such party almost ended in an alligator eating a man’s arm, another nearly killed a grandmother and in 2017, a 47,000 acre wildfire was started causing $8m in damages – when will we learn?

Thankfully, everyone’s favourite celebrity Chrissy Teigen has become anti-gender reveal party mascot we all needed. While on bed rest for her third pregnancy, Teigen accidentally announced the gender of her baby in an Instagram stories video. Speaking about the complications that have led her to be on bed rest, Teigen said, “It’s so weird because the baby’s really really healthy. He’s big. He’s probably, oops! That was stupid.”

Realising what she’d done, Teigen then covered her mouth before opting to continue with her health update. “Oops! I’m stupid…anyway,” she said. “It’s growing beautifully, everything’s good. I’m feeling really good, but my placenta’s really, really weak, and it’s causing me to really bleed a lot. Basically it’s just pretty high-risk and, you know, it’s just this poor thing has been through so much already.” She captioned the post, “hahahahaha might as well tell you.”

When a fan wrote on Twitter that Teigen had had “The perfect gender reveal,” she replied, “No fires and no one shot in the dick.”

Teigen and her husband, John Legend, are already parents to two children: oldest daughter Luna, 4, and their son Miles, 2.
