The measure of a person’s character and maturity is truly exposed when it comes to their treatment of an ex-partner. Stubbornness, resentment and trouble letting go are usual emotional responses. Because all of sudden, the one person you have shared your entire everything with is no longer around – nor are their friends, family or bedtime phone chats – and mourning that relationship can be really hard. It’s this loss that can cause most of us to never want to see an ex-boyfriend or ex-girlfriend again.

Recently though, we’ve seen Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom turn this idea on its romantic head by amicably parting ways – and by amicably, we mean without egos and awkwardness. We can now add Chris Evans to this list.

The actor – who has dated Jessica Biel, Minka Kelly and most recently Gifted co-star Jenny Slate – is the ex-boyfriend you would want to have. If he runs into any of them on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, he embraces the moment. “It’s very rare [I run into them],” he told Elle. “But I’ve had no bad break-ups in my life. Typically, if I see an ex, I give a big hug, and it’s a wonderful catch-up.”

For some, it’s a hard concept to grapple with. Old feelings or resentment can make alot of people cross the road and walk in the opposite direction or at least hide in a near-by bread shop to avoid a run-in with an ex. But the ever-mature and ever-gentlemanly Evans takes the high road. “If you’re ever fortunate enough to love someone and have them love you back, it’s worth protecting that. It’s rare that someone can truly know you. And if you’ve broken through that kind of wall, I think it’s important to value that.”

Asked whether his ex’s would feel the same about him, the actor modestly answered, “I hope.”
