If there was ever any doubt, Chanel’s Spring/Summer 2022 show has officially put the notion to rest – nostalgia-led beauty is going absolutely nowhere. This season’s show conjured flashbacks to perhaps the most instantly recognisable decades in fashion – the 80s and 90s with hints of the 00s, where supermodels reigned supreme and glamour was the core epithet for the hair and makeup looks that appeared on the runway.
For the luxury house’s first in-person ready-to-wear show since the onset of the pandemic, Virginie Viard reimagined fashion’s most extravagant periods with an evocative collection and an ode to ‘click-flash’ photography at the end of the catwalk.
Hairstylist Damien Boissinot translated Viard’s vivid expression of the eras to models’ hair by way of playful (albeit expensive-looking) locks – styled mirrorball sleek and straight, or pulled neatly into braids.
Glossy lengths were adorned with 90s-esque accoutrements, including hair clips snapped primly about the face, detailed headbands and textured bows secured at the nape of the neck, adding to the retro aesthetic.
Using Chanel products, makeup lead Tom Pecheux created a fresh, luminous complexion that recalled trademark supermodel skin – a peachy-pink flush, subtly sculpted cheeks, shimmering garnet eyeshadow and a healthy dose of glow.
Skin was prepped with Chanel’s Hydra Beauty Micro-Sérum ($135) and Hydra Beauty Camellia Water Cream ($94), with a misting of Sublimage La Brume ($374) for extra hydration and radiance. Nails were also primed with La Base before receiving a light layer of the house’s classic Le Vernis lacquer in 167 Ballerina ($42) and Le Gel Coat ($42) to finish
On cheeks, depth, definition and warmth was added to the complexion via the Joues Contraste Powder Blush in the shade 608 Ombre ($75), with the Les Beiges Highlighting Fluid ($91) dialling up the radiance for each skin tone, in shades Pearly Glow and Sunkissed.
Brows were neatly filled in and shaped using the Stylo Sourcils Waterproof pencil ($56), with Le Gel Sourcils ($56) brushed through to keep the hairs in place. Lips were left soft and simple, with the Rouge Allure Velvet lipstick in 74 Low Key ($58) delivering the perfect matte pink pout.
The eye makeup took centre stage, with a mix of burnished berry and bronze hues courtesy of the Les 4 Ombres eyeshadow palette in 354 Warm Memories ($103) and Stylo Ombre Et Contour ($52) colours from Chanel’s Fall 2021 makeup collection – including 15 Contour Marron, 17 Contour Graphite and 19 Contour Beige – for a soft smoky eye.
Lashes were lifted with a coat of Le Volume Révolution De Chanel mascara in 10 Noir ($57), and a touch of the iconic Baume Essentiel Multi-Use Glow Stick in Transparent ($71) was also applied to the lids and lips for a subtle sheen that caught the light as cameras flashed.
The youthful hair and makeup wouldn’t feel out of place in today’s TikTok feed, giving credence to a moment where throwback fashion and beauty trends rise with new life on the platform.
Following a period of peak precariousness, it felt as if the exuberant looks somewhat legitimised our collective appetite for comfort and familiarity, with a modern twist.
Nostalgic or not, we’re envisioning this aesthetic for our immediate future.
