If there was such a thing as heaven on Earth, it would surely be the Grand Palais in Paris where a band of angels (Gigi, Kaia, Vittoria, Grace…) wander down the runway wearing new season Chanel. At this year’s Fall 2020 show, Virginie Viard allowed us all to play witness to her divine ascension as Chanel’s Creative Director, stripping back the excess of season’s past for a more nuanced approach. The beauty look was aligned – fresh skin, subtly defined eyes, boyish brows made up the quintessentially French Chanel woman – the only twist being a surrealist glowing highlight on the cheeks and generous helpings of iridescent gloss on the lips.

Here, we take an exclusive look backstage with Chanel’s Global Creative Makeup and Colour Designer Lucia Pica, who shares all the details surrounding the incredibly beautiful Fall 2020 look. See the complete interview below.

GRAZIA: What inspired you when creating this look?

Lucia: The vibe and the energy of the makeup is a very heightened freshness with a 70s twist. It’s about girls outdoors having blushed cheeks, glow on the skin. I added a touch of glamour by putting gloss on the lips.

GRAZIA: Talk us through the products you used on the day

Lucia: There are two looks. One is supernatural, fresh and glowy. The products I used for the skin are Les Beiges Eau De Teint and Palette Essentielle. Then, I used the Baume Essentiel in Transparent high on the cheekbones and on the eyelids. I also applied the mascara Le Volume Revolution De Chanel on the top and bottom lashes. Eyebrows are groomed, brushed up with a boyish feel. I added Rouge Coco Gloss in Aphrodite on the lips.

For the second look, we have the same base. However, on the eyes, I added more depth and diffusion with a light taupe colour. This look has a little bit more of the 70s vibe with Rouge Coco Gloss in Aphrodite on the lips, which gives a touch of glamour.

On the eyes, I applied Stylo Ombre Et Contour in Clair on the top of the lash line until the outer corner and finally on the socket line. Then, I really blended it. Finally, I applied it underneath, through the lash line and united the entire look.

Everything is very blended and diffused. This look doesn’t have the balm on the top of the lid, so it has a matte finish. It’s all about the freshness of the skin and really glossy cheekbones.

GRAZIA: Any other backstage tips and tricks you can share with us?

Lucia: I used the blush of the Palette Essentielle in Beige Médium very high on the cheeks and blended it down, giving the idea of a natural blush.

GRAZIA: If you could only pick one favourite product from the day, what would it be?

Lucia: I really enjoyed using the Baume Essentiel in Transparent because it gives a feeling of dewiness to the look. It brings a really modern and natural feel which is very effective and reflects the light beautifully.
