When Pete Davidson and Ariana Grande’s whirlwind romance hit the press in May 2018, it was all anyone could talk about for months. Everywhere you looked, there they were: walking the streets holding hands, kissing on red carpets, posting loved up Instagrams and then, within a few weeks, moving in together and getting engaged. It was… a lot.

In amongst all the chaos, there was someone completely blindsided and devastated by the news: comedian Cazzie David, who was dating Davidson for two-and-a-half years, right up until he met Grande.

At the time, David responded to her ex’s incredibly public new relationship with one of the most famous women in the world in the best way: by posting a photo of herself on an African safari a few days after the engagement announcement, writing, “Been in Africa, what’d I miss??”

Now, ahead of the release of her book, No One Asked For This, David is opening up about her split with Davidson publicly for the first time, writing in an essay that she initially ended things with the Saturday Night Live comedian because she couldn’t convince him that she loved him, but that a couple of days later, when she tried to work things out, Davidson told her on the phone that he was “the happiest he had ever been.”

Per The Los Angeles Times, David writes that Davidson dumped her in a text message two days following the phone call and just one day later, he was seen with Grande.

When she found out that Davidson had moved on so quickly – and so incredibly publicly – David “shook uncontrollably” in her father Larry David’s arms during a flight to her sister’s graduation. She says that the thought of Davidson “immediately falling in love, accompanied by audio of [Grande’s] baby voice whispering sweet nothings in his ear, dubbed over his past declarations of love and trust to me.”

“It was a really pivotal moment in my life,” David told the L.A. Times. “And writing about it has caused me a ton of anxiety, especially because I talk so much about hating the attention it brought me. Why would I bring more attention to myself by writing about it? But there’s nothing that’s gonna be worse than what I already experienced with that.”

Davidson and Grande’s relationship was over by October 2018 and he went on to date Kate Beckinsale, Margaret Qualley and Kaia Gerber. David and Davidson have now rekindled their friendship and David will go down in history for having one of the most hilarious and classy responses to being dumped for a world-famous pop star… What’d I miss?
