Cate Blanchett – Australian actress, director and forever blonde – is now a brunette.

Blanchett walked the red carpet at London’s Royal Albert Hall as a brunette, debuting the new chestnut ‘do for the first time at the BAFTAs. For the natural blonde, the new dark dye job actually faired well on Blanchett, who typically favours cool, icy tones up top. Much warmer in tone, the block colour skewed red, with a kind of auburn rinse throughout, a subtle riff on the rich jewels in her Christopher Kane gown.

Impossibly glossy, the shoulder-grazing cut was blow-waved with a gentle bounce at its ends and a deep side part at the root. Makeup was kept soft and rosy; a hint of gloss here, a smidge of blush there, with her new hair the true star.

Proving the power of a good hair transformation, we’re very much enjoying Cate’s darker side – perhaps even more than her blonde mane. Maybe. Just.
