It would seem love actually does cost a thing. One million dollars is the price Alex Rodriguez reportedly spent on Jennifer Lopez’s engagement ring. According to multiple jewellers, the emerald cut diamond – historically a sign of wealth – sits anywhere between 11 carats and 15 carats and is a persuasive nod to Lopez’s famous lyric “Used to have a little, now I have a lot”. But after years of proclaiming she’s real (Ja Rule can vouch for this one), can she still be Jenny From The Block with this emerald on her hand?
Rodriguez, 43, proposed to his girlfriend of two years on holidays at an undisclosed location. In an interview with Red magazine earlier this year, Lopez, 49, said she and the former Yankees player have very similar work ethics and before coining their famous alter egos – JLo and ARod – both came from nothing. “Both Alex and I are Latino. We are both self-made. He was always the hardest working baseball player that was – me, the same. We have that in common,” she said. “We have the same work ethic. We also appreciate and know that coming from nothing, we always want to try to help and give back and teach our kids that.”
Lopez was married to singer Marc Anthony for ten years and the couple share two children, Max and Emme. She was previously married to choreographer Cris Judd and waiter and actor Ojani Noa. Before Rodriguez, the singer was in a relationship with her backup dancer Casper Smart. “I feel like I’m in my second, third, or fourth act,” Lopez told the same publication. “I feel like I’ve lived several lifetimes already and I’ve had to figure myself out along the way, work out why I felt a certain way, or got into relationships that didn’t serve me. And I finally realised, ‘It’s me. It’s all me. I got to fix some stuff. I need to understand my own worth and value’.”
Appearing on the Ellen DeGeneres show in November 2018, the talk-show host toyed with Lopez telling her Rodriguez has told her he was going to get his girlfriend something “romantic, thoughtful but inexpensive.”
“Did he say inexpensive?” Lopez replied. “Well, that’s not going to work!”
The pair met twenty years ago when Rodriguez received an autograph from Lopez. It would take 18 years before they began a relationship.
While Lopez is reportedly worth US$400 million, Rodriguez is said to have a net worth of US$350 million. The pair live in New York City’s highest residential building, a penthouse uptown listed at US$15 million. So the question still stands: Can you still be Jenny From The Block with that many rocks?
