Asking for more money is a woman’s moral imperative, according to Brie Larson.
The Oscar-winning actress told a packed room at the 10th annual Women in the World conference in New York City on Wednesday night that if asking for a pay rise makes you uncomfortable, remember it’s about so much more than you.
“Money is actually something I am excited to talk about,” the Oscar winner said.
“It’s this thing that people think is super icky to talk about, but … making women feel icky about money is a trap. It makes us feel icky, so we don’t want to talk about it or ask for a rate we know we deserve.”
Larson said she refuses to feel guilty about ever discussing money or pushing to be paid more for her roles.
“The reason that I was able to get the money that I have now is because of the women that were before me,” the Captain Marvel star said.
“Don’t do it for you. Do it for the women who are going to come after you. It’s them you are helping.
“Do it, we need you,” she told the room to thunderous applause.
Larson also used the opportunity to slam the idea that female-led films don’t make as much money as male-led films, after Captain Marvel became the highest-grossing film starring a woman of all time, surpassing one billion dollars in global sales.
“[I can’t stand] this weird idea that women can’t open movies … it’s bogus,” she said.
“I’m grateful to be normalising the concept that women can make a million dollars. I don’t know why that was hard to comprehend in the first place.”
Larson has reportedly signed on to reprise the role of Danvers in a second Captain Marvel film.
