Though she may have copped some backlash for method dressing throughout the It Ends With Us press tour, Blake Lively continues taking a thematic approach to dressing. On Tuesday, she and her husband, Ryan Reynolds, attended a special screening of Wicked: Part One in New York City, where they posed for photos with the movie’s leads, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.

For the occasion, Lively wore a white blazer over a floral embroidered shirt by Bode and light-washed blue jeans. She accessorised with a Chanel Camellia Crochet Flap Bag and statement gold earrings. Most notable were her Marc Jacobs ‘Kiki’ platform Mary-Jane shoes, which were a bold nod to Dorothy’s ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz. She even paired the heels with blue socks, just like the original character played by Judy Garland.

Reynolds, on the other hand, opted for a coordinating beige corduroy set that could be a subtle reference to the film’s Cowardly Lion character.

The couple then posed with the film’s stars, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, who play Elphaba and Glinda, respectively.

The actresses were dressed in casual winter gear—a stark departure from the rest of their high-glamour Wicked press tour.

In L. Frank Baum’s original 1900 novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the ruby red slippers are a magical pair of shoes worn by the film’s heroine, Dorothy. Though the book noted the shoes as silver, screenwriter Noel Langley allegedly had the idea to switch them to red for the 1940 film to take advantage of a technicolour film process that was new at the time. Or so the legend goes.

Several pairs were made for filming, but only five pairs are known to have survived, including a pair that is on display at the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of American History.
