2019 marks 50 years since the beginning of Sesame Street. 50 years of Big Bird, of Oscar the Grouch, of sunny days, sweepin’ the clouds away. Now we’re not saying there’s a suspicious commercial link between this remarkable anniversary and the wild coat trend sweeping the very core age-group that grew up with said puppets, but it certainly is a serendipitous coincidence.

Starting with New York Fashion Week, it became immediately obvious that coats are no longer black and lean and slick. They are big and bright and fluffy. Big and bright and fluffy like Elmo. Or The Cookie Monster. They’re a cousin-once-removed from the ‘Snuggie’ blankets of 2015. They’re the next best thing to leaving the house in a dressing gown. So perhaps their popularity has nothing to do with puppet-chic, perhaps coats have taken a turn for the fuzzy because fashion is fun and everyone was cold. A big fluffy overcoat is not only superbly practical to shield an arctic wind, but its mere existence is enough to brighten even the grouchiest winter’s day.
