Tina Knowles Lawson has been known to publicly share things her daughters would prefer she didn’t, such as a hastily deleted photo of Solange and Jay-Z in a lift (just a little awkward post Met Gala elevator fight).

So it’s not clear if Beyonce and Solange will be okay with their mum telling the world that the sisters have been to therapy together.

In an interview with journalist Maria Shriver, Tina discussed how she made Beyonce and Solange go to joint counselling after Beyonce became famous as a young girl.

Knowles-Lawson said she worried about the effect it would have on Solange.

“I was very sensitive to that because I grew up where I felt like my mum liked my brother more. And she loved him more. So I was really sensitive to it,” she said.

“So I had days I devoted to — on Wednesday I took off work and that was Solange’s day. She was a lot younger than Beyoncé.

“It was tough because Beyoncé was this little superstar in our city.”

“I took them to counselling,” she continued.

“Very early. So that the counsellor could help Beyoncé be more sensitive to Solange because she couldn’t stand her for a minute. You know, when they were little, when she was five, [Solange] was all in her stuff, she was trying to hang around her and her friends. Beyoncé was really irritated. But it made her more sensitive to who her sister was and what she had to deal with because of her.”

Tina said she took the girls to therapy despite her family telling her she shouldn’t.

“My family was like, ’You’re going to make them crazy because they’re too young for you to take them.’ But I wanted Beyoncé to be sensitive to the fact that Solange had to deal with being a little bit in her shadow. And it made her way more sensitive and protective,” she said. “And they’re still fiercely protective of each other.”

If Beyonce and Solange’s recent duet at Coachella is anything to go by, it worked. Because even though they fell down, they got straight back up again. (1.05 mark in the video below).
