After an extended delay due to COVID-19, we’re now only a few short weeks aways from the 93rd Academy Awards Ceremony, otherwise known as the 2021 Oscars. While awards season just missed the global pandemic last year, this year we’ve seen ceremonies go virtual and winners accept their awards while wearing their pyjamas at home.
But the organisers behind the Oscars are hell-bent on making this year as typical and traditional as possible – at least as much as it can be, with stars now separated by border restrictions across the globe. There will be an in-person element, albeit a small one, and stars will once again be encouraged to don their evening best.
Here’s hoping we’ll see a glamorous return to form on the red carpet, which has become renowned for delivering some of the most show-stopping moments in Hollywood history – particularly as it pertains to beauty. To commemorate this momentous occasion (or perhaps even serve as inspiration to some of this years’ attendees), we’ve rounded up some of the best Oscars beauty looks of all time.
Lupita Nyong’o owned the red carpet in 2014, where she secured her first Academy Award win for Best Supporting Actress. We’d argue this beautiful look, complete with natural tresses and luminous makeup, was trophy-worthy too,
Rooney Mara has always been one to shirk convention, and this bold fringe is the perfect example of how she never fails make it work. The neatly groomed brows, thick lashes and glossy red lip polish off this timeless look.
The winged eyeliner and chic chignon might be commendable, but they’re still mere companions to Gemma Chan‘s absurdly beautiful face.
This relaxed side bun with face-framing tendrils, lashes and a red lip was a real moment for Michelle Williams, who is proof that unusual colour combinations can work.
She’s done a number of hairstyles at the Oscars over the years – the pixie cut, the long straight layers with full bangs – but we loved seeing Halle Berry celebrate curls in 2017.
At the peak of her fame, Winona Ryder looked every inch the ingenue with retro-inspired finger waves back in 1996.
Behold the original beauty icon Cher, who attended the 1973 ceremony with this bronzed complexion, burgundy double liner and sleek long locks.
Always the epitome of class, Grace Kelly‘s signature look has been referenced by modern celebrities ever since she stepped on to the red carpet.
Jennifer Hudson won her first Oscar back in 2007, but we’ll always remember her radiant complexion and elegantly shimmering eyeshadow.
Elle Macpherson‘s trademark bombshell waves from 1994 are going on our moodboard for post-pandemic parties.
It’s Beyoncé doing full glamour on a red carpet. Need we say more?
