It was a classic Victorian day: four seasons, sport and fashion. Such Melbourne truisms were picked up and moved (by yacht, nonetheless) to the tip of the Point Nepean coast for the Alfa Romeo Portsea Polo.

There were horses (much to the surprise of many a Polo-goer), rain and lot of silk headscarves. A glamorous hybrid of Melbourne and Sydney celebrities gathered – or more so huddled – under the Alfa Romeo Marquee, which again, was stellar in its execution. In keeping with the Italian heritage of the brand, the Amalfi Coast (and Roma, Milan and Napoli) were transported to Portsea. The Aperol Spritzes were flowing, the Parmesan slicing and the San Danielle prosciutto a-carving. It was a big Italian affair that was punctuated with the tropes of a relaxed yet equally glamorous Italian Rivera.

White was the obvious (but very welcome) choice for many guests, as too the unremitting summer trend of linen. Fabrics were both raw and soft, sandals and wedges were of the straw variety, and heads were adorned in hats and scarves, weaved in plaits, top-knots and ponies.

What differentiates Polo dressing to Racing? “A degree of effortlessness,” notes stylist Elliot Garnaut, who dressed four of the celebrity Polo-goers: Natalie Roser, Brooke Hogan, Rebecca Harding and Rozalia Russian.

“Where Racing is dressing to the nines, the Polo allows for a platform to chicly approach a more casual look.”

While the rain persisted, it was not going to dampen anyone’s spirits (just their hair). Those wearing wide-brimmed hats were the lucky ones; a serendipitous fashion moment became a winning beauty move. Hair, despite being rain-kissed, was at its creative best, with hair accessories in abundance. In the beauty stakes, the bronzed and the natural reigned supreme, with nude lips, highlighted skin and earthy eyes. A pop red here, a brooding crimson there, makeup was, generally speaking, fresh and dewy. A day of exceptional highs, a lot of salumi and Spritzin’.

Here, a look at the fashionable frontrunners from the Alfa Romeo Portsea Polo.
