Bella Hadid appeared on the Victoria’s Secret VS Voices podcast this week to discuss a string of “abusive” relationships she has experienced in both her professional and private life. The supermodel told host Amanda de Cadenet that she learnt toxic behaviours like “people pleasing” as a result.

“I constantly went back to men – and also, women – that had abused me and that’s where the people pleasing came in,” the 25-year-old revealed to the newly-launched outlet. “I started not having boundaries, not only sexually, physically, emotionally, but then it went into my work space. I began to be a people-pleaser with my job.”

Hadid has been romantically linked to The Weeknd, Drake and NFL star Odell Beckham Jr. in the past. Without naming names, she added how growing up she struggled to stand up for herself both in romantic settings as well as around male family. The Kin. founder is currently dating 33-year-old art director, Marc Kalman.

“I always felt like my voice was never heard growing up. I grew up around men – whether that was in relationships or family or whatever that was – where I was constantly told that my voice was less important than their voice,” Hadid said.

“Then moving into relationships growing up, and not having the boundaries of being able to stick up for myself and have my voice being heard, affected me in my adult relationships very intensely,” she continued. “My nervous system would crash. It was fight or flight.”

Hadid garnered plenty of controversy when she returned as a Victoria’s Secret ambassador in late 2021 after being one of many models who accused the lingerie giant of bullying following the cancellation of the annual runway show back in 2019. According to the star, the decision was made to gain back some of her lost confidence.

“Another way that I realised my growth—which was super important for me—was being able to be in a setting that I once felt unempowered, and to now feel so empowered and so reassured,” she said in an interview at the time.
