Margot Robbie was the only Australian nominated for a British Academy Of Film And Television Award (known as the BAFTAS) overnight. The 29-year-old is up for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Queen Elizabeth I in the critically diverse film Mary, Queen Of Scots.

The British equivalent of the Academy Awards, the BAFTAs are held two days before Oscar voters begin their final selects. In fact, the Brits are such excellent Oscar winner predictors, they have foreseen eight of the last 16 Best Picture Oscar winners.

While the Golden Globes pedigree rates strong in Oscar predictions as well, Bohemian Rhapsody – the Queen biopic which took out Best Motion Picture in the drama category on Sunday night in Los Angeles – was not included in the BAFTA’s Best Film category. Instead we saw Roma, A Star Is Born, BlacKkKlansman, Green Book and The Favourite – the latter received 12 nominations which is five more than any other film. It’s three main actors Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz and Olivia Colman (who won the golden Globe for the best Actress in a musical or comedy) all received nominations. Colman will go up against Lady Gaga for A Star Is Born, Viola Davis for Widows, Melissa McCarthy for Can You Veer Forgive Me? And Glenn Close for The Wife (she too took home the Globe for Best Actress in a drama on Sunday).

Rami Malek – who beat out the favourite Bradley Cooper to the Best Actor in a drama Globe – is nominated for a Best Actor BAFTA, as is Cooper, alongside Christian Bale for Vice (he took home the Globe for Best Actor in a musical or comedy on Sunday), Viggo Mortensen for Green Book and Steve Coogan for Stan & Ollie. Cooper is also up for Best Director.

The 2019 BAFTAS, hosted by Joanna Lumley, will commence on February 10 (Monday February 11 in Australia). As usual, GRAZIA will have all the live coverage from London that day – along with the 2019 Grammy Awards held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on the same day.
