Few things are more quintessentially British than Glastonbury, the annual music extravaganza that attracts upwards of 200,000 people each year. Naturally, the event was cancelled this time last year—with tickets being rolled over until June 2022. Given that Londoners have spent the better part of the last year in lockdown, it’s perhaps no surprise that many Brits are fantasising about a future in which they can wear outrageous outfits and jump around in heaving sweaty crowds.

That certainly appears to have been the case for Alice Temperley, whose Fall 2021 collection is chock-full of homages to the iconic music festival. Peasant dresses worn with shrunken vests and slouchy boots (Sienna Miller eat your heart out), studded leather jackets, and suede button-down A-line skirts all feature prominently, as do stage-ready ensembles—sequin-embellished jumpsuits and a Prince-esque purple velvet three-piece suit.

Temperley was once dubbed the “English Ralph Lauren”, a phrase that embodies the effortless knack she has for creating flattering clothes that women actually want to wear. It’s a testament to her aesthetic range that the pieces in her Fall21 collection could as easily be seen on Alexa Chung (reigning queen of Glasto) as they could on Kate Middleton—the latter is a long-time fan, and Pippa Middleton wore Temperley to her sister’s wedding reception in 2011.

A decade ago Temperley told The Guardian: “I’m not trying to prove a point or be the next big thing, I’m doing it because I like making things that people look good in, that are wearable, that aren’t trying too hard, a woman doing it for a woman.” This guiding principle has held her in remarkable stead—the label is two years shy of its 20th anniversary—and only goes to prove the value of consistency in an industry that can often forget its value.
