Armie Hammer has been in the news recently for all the wrong reasons. The Call Me by your Name actor, who became a household name when he starred alongside everyone’s favourite softboy, Timothee Chalamet, in the 2017 romance, has been accused of sending graphic sexual messages to multiple women, including ones in which he says he’s a cannibal.

It all started when the anonymous woman behind the Instagram account @houseofeffie started sharing screenshots of the alleged DMs from the actor for several days, which allegedly show Hammer’s Instagram account sending sexually explicit messages to a number of women he was seeing while still with his estranged wife, Elizabeth Chambers. The woman alleges she was in a consensual affair with Hammer for four years while he was married, and that she thought she was the only one until recently, when other women started messaging her with similar stories.

Additionally, writer Jessica Ciencin Henriquez, who was seen on a date with Hammer in September – has claimed the disturbing texts are real, writing on Twitter, “If you are still questioning whether or not those Armie Hammer DMs are real (and they are) maybe you should start questioning why we live in a culture willing to give abusers the benefit of the doubt instead of victims.”

Hammer’s ex-girlfriend, Courtney Vucekovich, who dated the actor from June to August 2020 – right after his divorce announcement, also told Page Six that while she couldn’t confirm whether those specific screenshots were legitimate, they were no surprise. “He said to me he wants to break my rib and barbecue and eat it,” she told the publication. “He says, ‘I want to take a bite out of you.’ If I had a little cut on my hand, he’d like suck it or lick it. That’s about as weird as we got.”

After a few days of silence, Hammer has now responded to the claims with a short statement, confirming he’s dropped out of his upcoming rom-com, Shotgun Wedding, which he was set to star in alongside Jennifer Lopez. “I’m not responding to these bullshit claims but in light of the vicious and spurious online attacks against me, I cannot in good conscience now leave my children for 4 months to shoot a film in the Dominican Republic,” he said in a statement shared to Variety, Deadline, and The Hollywood Reporter. “Lionsgate is supporting me in this and I’m grateful to them for that.”

As for Hammer’s relationship with Chambers, in July 2020, the couple announced their separation after 10 years of marriage. A model and culinary entrepreneur, 38-year-old Chambers is the owner and CEO of Bird Bakery in San Antonio and Dallas, and the host of three Food Network shows. To announce their separation, Hammer and Chambers posted identical Instagram statements, which read, “Thirteen years as best friends, soulmates, partners and then parents. It has been an incredible journey, but together, we’ve decided to turn the page and move on from our marriage.”

The divorce announcement was a sharp turnaround from Chambers’ post only two months prior, which celebrated the pair’s decade-long marriage. “Happy Anniversary, my love,” she wrote in May 2020. “TEN years married, twelve together, thirteen years as best friends. I’m beyond grateful for you, this decade, our family and the dreamiest Friday night anniversary sunset. And thank you to Hopsey’s friend, 6-year-old, Sophie who was at the beach and captured this moment. ❤️”

So, what happened?

According to sources, Chambers had no idea about these alleged messages to other women, or the nature of them. A source told The Daily Mail that Chambers is in “complete shock” over the allegations, adding that a lot of the women involved “have reached out to [her],” adding that, “Although she didn’t want to admit it to herself at first, she knows now they are speaking the truth.”

Of course, at the time of the couple’s split there were reports that Chambers had found “passionate texts” on Hammer’s phone in fall of 2019, leading the pair to start couple’s therapy. The Daily Mail reported that Chambers found texts on Hammer’s phone after filming of Netflix movie Rebecca ended in August 2019. Chambers and Hammer reportedly then started therapy to work on their marriage and remained together through the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, when the family isolated together in the Cayman Islands. However, the publication reports that when Hammer traveled to Miami, he “accidentally sent Chambers a sexually explicit text” that she knew was meant for another woman, leading to the couple’s divorce announcement.

Chambers and Hammer met back in 2006, when Hammer was 20, and Chambers was 24. At the time, Chambers was dating one of Hammer’s friends and the pair remained friends for roughly two years, before Hammer convinced Chambers to leave her boyfriend and become his. “Our friendship continued to grow and grow until one day when I was like, ‘I can’t be friends with you anymore. You’ve got to break up with your boyfriend, and we’ve got to start dating,” Hammer told Vulture in 2017. The former couple then began dating in 2008, and married in 2010.
