For celebrities, commenting on an ex’s new relationship is a dangerous business.

Say too much and you’ll be accused of inserting yourself in their narrative, or hiding what you really think (ahem, Anna Faris). Decline to comment at all and you risk being perceived as bitter and jealous, and the tabloids will take hold and never let go.

But Ariana Grande nailed it when asked about Pete Davidson’s rumoured new romance with actress Kate Beckinsale. Grande was leaving a radio station in Los Angeles overnight when a TMZ photographer asked her for her thoughts. Her answer?

“So cute” was all the 25-year-old said before getting into a waiting car.

The internet will, of course, be the internet, reading between the lines and over-analysing the God Is A Woman’s comment searching for hidden meaning, or shade. But honestly? Ariana has built a career on being real, authentic and telling it how she sees it. And she told us exactly how she sees it – her break-up with Davidson, that is – in the lyrics of a little song you might have heard called Thank U, Next.

Her new album Thank U, Next comes out on Saturday.
