At first glance, you see a whimsical, one-shouldered lilac gown. But when you find out Rita Ora’s sartorial choice is in fact a creation by Harvey Weinstein’s ex-wife Georgina Chapman, the dishevelled tulle layers begin to show. So here in lies the question; in your mind, what does wearing Marchesa say to you about Ora?
While the label continues it’s upward climb back to the top of the ginormous proverbial designer hill – the same one which threw the brand to it’s bottom in the wake of the Weinstein scandal – Ora is only one of a handful of celebrities to flaunt the label. Scarlett Johansson wore a burgundy Marchesa gown to the Met Gala in May this year (“I wore Marchesa because their clothes make women feel confident and beautiful and it is my pleasure to support a brand created by two incredibly talented and important female designers,” Johansson told The Cut at the time) while Vanessa Hudgens wore a blush pink number to the August premiere of her film Dog Days prompting online fashion commentators to ask; Was Marchesa lobbying for a comeback?
After Chapman’s husband faced a slew of sexual harassment charges in 2017, Marchesa – and the film mogul’s now ex-wife in particular – kept a low profile. The designer and her co-founder chose not to show at New York Fashion Week in February 2018 and Chapman stepped back from the brand altogether. Many believed the label only ever achieved A-List success because Weinstein reportedly bullied actresses into wearing it. “I don’t want to be viewed as a victim,” Chapman told Vogue at the time of her marriage breakdown. “Because I don’t think I am. I am a woman in a shit situation, but it’s not unique.”
Ora, 28, performed her track Let You Love Me at the ARIA Awards last night at The Star in Sydney. Watch her performance below.
