Everyone’s favourite American politician, Alexandria Orcasio-Cortez, rang in her 31st birthday yesterday and to celebrate, thousands of teenagers created a new TikTok challenge which remixes a Kendrick Lamar song and excerpts from AOC’s speech at congress, when she famously called out a misogynistic Republican senator who called her a bitch on the steps of the Capitol.
Days after the incident in July, and a half-assed apology from Ted Yoho, AOC spoke eloquently on the House floor in a speech that quickly went viral. “What I do have issue with is using women, our wives and daughters, as shields and excuses for poor behavior,” she said at the time, after Yoho tried to use his family to deflect from his words.
“Mr. Yoho mentioned that he has a wife and two daughters. I am two years younger than Mr. Yoho’s youngest daughter. I am someone’s daughter too. My father, thankfully, is not alive to see how Mr. Yoho treated his daughter. My mother got to see Mr. Yoho’s disrespect on the floor of this House towards me on television. And I am here because I have to show my parents that I am their daughter and that they did not raise me to accept abuse from men,” she continued.
In honour of AOC’s birthday, teens remixed Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Humble’ and parts of her speech. Some even went one step further and lip-synched while applying makeup and AOC’s signature red lip.
I had to do it. I wonder how AOC feels knowing most of gen z thinks she’s iconic? (disclaimer to the parents: foul language.)
Now this is the kind of TikTok content I can get behind. Addison Rae, you’re up.
