The modern day Angelina Jolie and Billy Bob Thornton, Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly, just announced their engagement yesterday with all the blood-drinking and chaos you’d expect from the pair. But in happy news, even if 2022’s answer to the early aughts Hollywood It couple break up in a similar way as the original version did, they could still be friends in the future.
In fact, despite Jolie and Thornton breaking up almost 20 years ago, the actress still keeps in touch with her former step-son, Harry Thornton.
In a new interview, Thornton, who’s landed his first major acting role, revealed Jolie, who was married to his dad from 2000-2003, still sends him presents and stays up to date with his life. “To this day, she still sends me Christmas gifts every year and stuff like that,” the 27-year-old told Entertainment Tonight. I don’t talk to her on the phone every day,” he continued. ‘But every now and then we talk.”
Thornton went on to speak about how “fun” Jolie was as a stepmum when he was a child. “She was so cool,” he shared. “She took us camping every week and she rented, like, an RV one time, and we went on a full camping trip. She was just so fun for us back when we were, like, younger.”
When Jolie and Thornton split, infidelity rumours were rife. A few years later, Jolie spoke of the reasoning behind it, telling Vanity Fair, “He’s a really good man. He’s hysterical—we had a lot of laughs. … What went wrong, or not even wrong, but what wasn’t meant to be was he was focusing on his music and I was upstairs reading. I went through a change in my life and started paying more attention to the news and learning about other countries and becoming more politically active.”
“In a year I became who I am today, very much, and he became who he is today,” she explained. “It was just totally different paths in life, and then we just looked at each other one day and we had nothing to say to each other.”
In a 2016 interview with GQ, Thornton expressed his continued fondness of Jolie and added of their relationship, “I never felt good enough for her.”
Thornton’s not the only ex Jolie has stayed close with, either: after her break up from Brad Pitt, the actress was spotted visiting her other ex husband, Johnny Lee Miller, twice in one week. Perfecting consciously uncoupling before Gwyneth ever did!
