BBC named Amy Winehouse the “pre-eminent vocal talent of her generation”. Her lyrics were raw and deep, her performances emotional and it’s hard to fathom it’s been almost seven years since her death; a sad demise into alcoholism, drugs and bulimia at age 27. Even publicly battling those demons, none could question her innate talent. And as an unseen demo track from a 17-year-old Winehouse has recently emerged, it’s even harder to grasp the world lost such a talent so young.

“I’ve had it knocking about for so long,” explains Winehouse’s early producer and composer Gul Cang. “I found it again last week and thought – I’ll put it out there so people could hear it.”

Cang says the musician recorded the track – which is less jazz and more pop – in just three takes in the early 2000s. “It was at a particularly dire time in the pop world – lots of terrible, terrible girl bands and boy bands and we had to make something for them. Amy came in to see us, opened her mouth and just blew us all away,” Cang continued.

Listen to My Own Way below. And one of my personal favourites,  one of her massive singles, You Know I’m No Good. Just for good measure.
