Amber Heard has taken the aquatic theme very literally at the Aquaman premiere in London.
Arriving at the World Premiere of the DC Comics blockbuster, Heard wore head – or cap – to toe Maison Valentino Haute Couture, swanning out on the red carpet in a sea of marine green, which included a matching swimming cap.
Swimming with the current trend of hair accessories, the couture cap riffed on a 1920s bathing cap, eliciting images of glamorous synchronised swimmers gloriously grinning in Olympic pools and the like. It also recalled Miu Miu’s appliqué swim cap which made quite the splash in 2017 and rekindled our love affair with vintage hair accessories.
Amber Heard’s take on the humble swimming cap was slightly more haute; a rich floral brocade of icy blue and emerald green, it even included a classic chin strap (very retro, indeed). And there wasn’t a blonde strand to be seen, all tucked neatly beneath.
For stylist Karla Welch, it was a moment in the making. “When you’ve waited since July to wear a @maisonvalentino haute couture masterpiece. And duh, it’s @aquamanmovie so obviously we went for the swim cap!” And lucky for Heard, there wasn’t a chlorinated pool in sight. Riding the unrelenting swell of the hair accessory, Welch’s not-so-subtle aquatic reference was apt for the premiere of a film dedicated to water; playful, tongue-in-cheek but chic.
Whilst the internet remains undecided on whether it was a sink or swim moment, we love Amber Heard’s haute swim cap; because where else can you wear a couture bathing cap so far from the water’s edge?
If this statement is anything to go by, perhaps floaties and nose pegs will make a red carpet appearance in the not so distant future. We won’t hold our breath.
