Wow. The second trailer to the highly-anticipated Tomb Raider film was released overnight. Based on a popular video game – and 16 years since Angelina Jolie made the same part iconic – Oscar-winning actress Alicia Vikander is Lara Croft. And this teaser is by far more titillating than its first peek.

Seven years after her father’s death, Croft goes on the hunt for his last known destination: “a fabled tomb on a mythical island that might be off the coast of Japan”. She faces villains, a treacherous terrain and crosses paths with an evil organisation who are plotting a global genocide. Just like Wonder Woman (a film Vikander took herself off to the cinema to watch while filming Tomb Raider), it’s so good to see women as the top-billing action stars. And while those Jolie comparisons will keep critic’s writing, Vikander isn’t anything like her predecessor, she’s her own version of Croft. And a fit one at that, proven at 1.40 when a cover of Destiny’s Child’s Survivor begins.

Tomb Raider hits Australian cinemas March 15, 2018.
