Democratic congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has responded to US President Donald Trump’s racist tweets about her and three other female politicians.

Yesterday, Trump tweeted about Ocasio-Cortez as well as fellow Democratic congresswomen Ayanna Pressley, Ilhan Omar, and Rashida Tlaib, saying:

“So interesting to see ‘Progressive’ Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe … now loudly and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run.

“Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came.”

Trump’s words are shocking regardless of the background of the women, but also embarrassingly misinformed: all but Omar were born in the US, and Omar immigrated to America from Somalia at a young age, becoming a citizen at 17.

If you know anything about AOC, you won’t be surprised to hear she fired right back.

“You’ve destroyed our border with inhumane camps, all at a benefit to you & the corps who profit off them,” she responded the same day.

“You are angry because you can’t conceive of an America that includes us …. You rely on a frightened America for your plunder.

“On top of not accepting an America that elected us, you cannot accept that we don’t fear you, either,” she added.

“You can’t accept that we will call your bluff & offer a positive vision for this country. And that’s what makes you seethe.”

On Monday, she wasn’t letting up.

“It’s important to note that the President’s words [yesterday], telling four American Congresswomen of colour “go back to your own country,” is hallmark language of white supremacists. Trump feels comfortable leading the GOP [Republican party] into outright racism, and that should concern all Americans.”

Pitifully, Trump doubled-down on his comments on Monday.

“When will the Radical Left Congresswomen apologise to our Country, the people of Israel and even to the Office of the President, for the foul language they have used, and the terrible things they have said,” he tweeted.

“So many people are angry at them & their horrible & disgusting actions!”

“If Democrats want to unite around the foul language & racist hatred spewed from the mouths and actions of these very unpopular & unrepresentative Congresswomen, it will be interesting to see how it plays out.”

Interesting indeed.
