Candle-lit skin, bare eyes and a fluid flush on cheeks; the makeup manifesto of Aje’s Resort 17/18 show was a simple one.

“Skin is our inspiration.”

Makeup director for Laura Mercier, Ania Milczarczyk, forwent a typical muse, namely those of celebrity, influencer and model proportions, and let both her craft and canvas inspire her. “It’s a timeless, classic thing and you don’t need to be inspired by anyone to have beautiful skin.”

Model skin was smothered only in Mercier’s cult Tinted Moisturiser, with a dab of Candle Glow for those needing a little extra coverage.

The only pop of colour was a swipe of cream blush, which was melted into the skin with a sponge, proving perky and youthful rather than punchy and profound.

“We’ve used a cream blush on the apples of the cheeks. The blush colours vary depending on the girls colourings and I’ve been blending the blush in with a sponge so it seamlessly blends and doesn’t look powdery on, like it’s sitting on top of the skin.”

Eyes were remarkably undecorated, as in, nothing at all. Completely and utterly undressed, the only hint of makeup was a clear gloss brushed upwards through the brow, as a means to fluff and puff only. “We haven’t used any colours that could clash with the clothes, we’ve kept the eyes nude; we don’t have any eye shadows, no mascara, nothing in the brows, we’ve just put a clear gel in to brush the brows up.”

Ania’s beauty canon was clear, “We really want everything to look like it’s coming from within.”

Including the highlight. Australia’s unofficial authority on highlight (read: every girl’s highlight goals), Ania ditched the gleam, the glitter and even the sparkle for a wet sheen. The polish and patina on models cheekbones was by way of – surprise – a skincare product, Rose Oil. But be warned (particularly those with a penchant for heavy-handed application), certain rules apply to avoid slippery skin roads.

“With an oil, the trick is to never come down the front, just keep it to the sides,” says Ania. “The other trick I would suggest is to really start off light and build it up. Don’t just go straight on with the oil because you can go from highlighted to oily in a second. The placement is really important and to use as little as possible and build it up.”

On her beauty forecast for 2017? “I hope skin continues as a trend in 2017. I hope that blush is a trend, too. It took me ages to get into blush, so I’m a bit late to the party which is why I’m so excited about it! Everyone is probably like ew, blush isn’t a trend, but I’m like, yay blush!”

Let’s hope her crystal ball conjecture is right; blush is alright and skin for the win.
