Addison Rae is once again dipping into the fashion archives.
For her latest performance at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles, the pop star reached for a look that eschewed flashy stagewear for something a little more high art. Rae wore a drop-waist dress from Rodarte’s Spring/Summer 2012 collection, its pleated circle skirt and off-the-shoulder neckline rendered in Vincent van Gogh’s iconic sunflower print—the first of which was completed in 1887.

Styled by Dara Allen, this was no ordinary archival pull. The same dress recently held pride of place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion exhibition, which was the theme of the 2024 Met Gala red carpet.

By bringing it back to the stage, Rae proved that beautiful garments are made to be seen.

Rodarte’s SS12 collection, designed by sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy, has long been remembered as one of the label’s most imaginative. Inspired by the 1959 Disney classic Sleeping Beauty and Van Gogh’s most recognisable works, it drew a front row that glittered with the likes of Dakota and Elle Fanning, Rooney Mara, and Taylor Swift. Alongside the sunflower motif, the collection also immortalised ‘Starry Night’ on the runway.
Where the original runway look was paired with gothic makeup and razor-sharp stilettos, Rae and Allen stripped it back. With simple Christian Louboutin pumps and fresh, minimal beauty, she enabled the piece to speak for itself.
As a budding vintage fashion darling, the ‘Aquamarine’ singer’s red carpet style history already boasts an impressive archival line-up, having previously worn Dior by John Galliano, Margiela, and Versace looks almost as old as herself.
