The red carpet game has changed

2018 was a monumental year for women. Just months after disgraced film mogul Harvey Weinstein was (at last) publicly burnt at the stake as over one hundred women came forward with stories of how he had humiliated, harassed and sexually abused them for decades, awards season was upon us and the celebrity soapbox at its loudest. The Golden Globes was the first awards show where Hollywood collective gathered since the scandal – and for the first time bad behaviour wasn’t kept to whispers at the table over some expensive champagne.
“Good evening ladies and remaining gentlemen,” host Seth Meyers began in his opening monologue. “It’s 2018 and marijuana is finally allowed and sexual harassment finally isn’t.” Oprah drove it home as she accepted the Cecil B. de Millie Award. “I want all the girls watching here to know that a new day is on the horizon,” she said. “And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women – many of whom are in this room tonight – and some pretty phenomenal men fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders that take us to time where nobody ever has to say ‘Me Too’ again.”
All the women on the red carpet that year chose to wear black in protest against sexual misconduct and in support of the newly-coined Time’s Up and Me Too movements. It was the beginning of a turning point as women across the world began sharing their stories, outing their abusers and encouraging others to come forward with theirs. No longer would women be silenced, movie stars shouted from the red carpet in lieu of questions about their dresses – and those ‘best and worst dress’ lists dissipated among prestigious publications. Today marks one year since that day – and the moment the red carpet game changed forever.
