Gone are the days where stylish women would wear their comfy flats on the commute to work, then slip on their heels in the stairwell for the sake of high-style.

Thanks to the designer slide trend that has dominated fashion for the past since the Autumn/Winter 2016 runways, it’s now perfectly acceptable to stay in those snug, backless flats all day.

British shoe designer Charlotte Olympia was ahead of the game, having released her now signature smoking slipper featuring an embroidered kitty face way back in 2014. (For the record, the style is still a hot seller – and street style favourite – to the day.)

Celebrity offspring-turned-it-girls Gigi Hadid and Sofia Richie know the paparazzi pull of a power slide too. As the face of Adidas, you’d expect Hadid to opt for their trainers at any given off-duty opportunity, but rather, you’re more likely to see her in a pair of the brand’s slides – teamed with a slip dress in summer or jeans and jacket in winter.

Fashion editors breathed a collective sigh of relief when slides became an acceptable option to skyscraper heels for the Fashion Week shows. Years of suffering long days running around New York, London, Milan and Paris in heels that were literally killer have been rewarded now that slipper-soft slip-ons are the thing.
