By now you’ve probably heard that Jennifer Lawrence stars in a new movie called mother! which has shocked audiences with its dark and twisted storyline.
Possibly owing to reviews describing the Darren Aronofsky film as a “roller-coaster-of-weird” and “horrifying … nearly unbelievable”, mother! has not been a success at the box office. It took in just USD $7.5 million on its opening weekend – compare that to Stephen King’s It, which took in USD $372 million in under two weeks.
mother! also scored an ‘F’ – the lowest rating possible – from CinemaScore, a company that surveys movie goers.
But Paramount, the film company behind mother! is defending the project against claims it’s a fail.
“This movie is very audacious and brave,” Paramount said in a statement.
“You are talking about a director at the top of his game, and an actress at the top of her game. They made a movie that was intended to be bold.
“Everyone wants original filmmaking, and everyone celebrates Netflix when they tell a story no-one else wants to tell. This is our version. We don’t want all movies to be safe. And it’s okay if some people don’t like it.”
mother! is showing in Australian cinemas now.
