Stylish, sultry or edgy? The return of the fishnet has been gathering momentum for several seasons now, notably grabbing our attention at Proenza Schouler’s Autumn/Winter 2015 show, then at both Louis Vuitton and Maison Margiela for Spring/Summer 2016. Despite its rather chequered history and those ‘lady of the night’ connections, the fishnet has been reinvented in an edgy way, making wide-holed stockings the most affordable it-accessory of the current season.

While it may seem intimidating at first, when styled well these new fishnets will add a fun detail to classic winter layers and sleek tailored looks. Channel a modern rock chic glamour by adding to everyday pieces already in your wardrobe. Question is, just how do you integrate Fishnets 2.0 into an outfit without going OTT both looks- and budget-wise?

1. PLAY WITH PROPORTIONS A personal favourite of mine: wear fishnets underneath a midi-length dress or pencil skirt for a pop of detail that dresses up an otherwise plain silhouette.

2. SOCK It to them Replace your everyday sock with netted ones or oversized fishnet stockings, ideally underneath cropped or ankle pants or a skirt so you can see them. Complete the look with sneakers or chunky open toe platforms for a wearable take on the runway trend. I’ve hunted down some affordable options for you below to help you get the look for less. You’re welcome!
