Leonardo DiCaprio hasn’t made a movie since winning the Best Actor Oscar for The Revenant. Will a portrayal of the Joker be his next role?

Warner Bros is working on a project starring the evil villain character – completely unrelated to the Marvel films including Suicide Squad in which the Joker is played by Jared Leto – and they’ve got their eye on Leo, according to Variety.

Martin Scorsese is set to direct the film, and he and DiCaprio have a long history, with Scorsese directing him in The Wolf Of Wall Street, The Departed, Shutter Island, Gangs Of New York and The Aviator.

If anyone can get Leo on board, surely it’s him.

DiCaprio also has a good relationship with Jack Nicholson, who gave an unforgettable portrayal of the Joker in 1989’s Batman, and that could influence his decision in different directions – Leo might turn to the icon for advice, or not want to take the role for fear he could never surpass Nicholson’s performance.

But that didn’t stop Heath Ledger, who posthumously won the Best Actor Oscar for his chilling and mesmerising version of the Joker in The Dark Knight.

It’ll still be a while until we know if this is DiCaprio’s next project – Warner Bros is reportedly yet to make him an official offer.

If he does go ahead with the role, you have to wonder how Jared Leto would feel about it – he’s set to play the Joker in several more Marvel films following on from Suicide Squad. Is there enough room in Hollywood for two?

Leo and Jared are known to be close – in fact, Leto recently said in an interview that DiCaprio is one of his only friends.

“I don’t have many friends so I do enjoy spending time with the few that I have,” he told ES magazine.

“Leo is really funny. I’ve known him for a very long time. But he’s usually busy. There are people I’m really enamoured with but it’s hard to find time to spend with them.”
