Selena Gomez co-wrote her new song released today, It Ain’t Me, and it’s clear her relationship and eventual break-up with Justin Bieber was the inspiration.
Selena and Justin’s turbulent, five-year relationship was put under strain by his hard partying (if you believe what you read in the tabloids), and her new song featuring Norwegian DJ Kygo tells the tale of a person fed up with a lover caught in the ups and down of an out-all-night-depressed-all-day cycle.
I had a dream
We were sipping whisky neat
Highest floor, the bowery
And I was high enough
‘Somewhere along the lines
We stopped seeing eye to eye
You were staying out all night
And I had enough
No, I don’t wanna know where you been or where you’re going
But I know I won’t be home
And you’ll be on your own
The most telling sign that the song references Bieber is this verse, which reflects the age she was when she started dating Justin in 2009.
I had a dream
We were back to seventeen
Summer nights and the liberties
Never growing up
I’ll take with me the polaroids and the memories
But you know I’m gonna leave behind the worst of us
Justin was Selena’s first long-term, adult relationship, so it’s not surprising she’d draw on that chapter of her life in her new work. It must be a lot for Bieber to process, especially since just a day earlier Gomez’s new boyfriend The Weeknd released a song that trashes Bieber and gloats about ‘stealing’ his girl.
