At last year’s MTV Video Music Awards, it was all about Taylor Swift. The singer led the nominations with 10 for Bad Blood, and won Video of the Year.
But the release of the 2016 nominations on Wednesday tells a very different story for Swift, who did not receive a single nod. Adding insult to injury, Kanye West’s video for Famous, which depicts her naked in bed and lyrically refers to her as a bitch, scored two nominations – the all important Video of the Year and Best Male Video.
So what happened to Taylor? Likely, the timing of her three video releases in the last year weren’t right. Wildest Dreams debuted at last year’s VMAs, so the judges likely considered that too old. Her other two recent video releases – Out Of The Woods and New Romantics, also dropped in the second half of 2015, and too much newer, more ground-breaking material has dropped since then – Lemonade, anyone?
If Kanye wins one of the two categories he’s nominated for, the world will be watching to see what kind of eccentric – and possibly Taylor-related – rant he gives. It might be a blessing that Swift won’t be in the room.
