The significance of Alessandro Michele showing Gucci’s Resort 2017 collection in Westminster Abbey was not lost. Of course, the vaulted-roofed Chancel was the place where Queen Elizabeth II was crowned, Princess Diana was farewelled and Kate Middleton and Prince William were married. While a few British traditionalists no doubt snubbed their noses at the Italian fashion house showing in such a monarchical building, the front row actually sat in the Cloisters, the garth peering through the old window arches. Among them were Georgia May Jagger, Alexa Chung, Salma Hayek, Pixie Geldof, Soko (who took over Gucci’s Snapchat prior to, backstage and during the show), A$AP Rocky and Elle Fanning.
It was both expected and interesting to have so many celebrities and influencers in the traditionally British Abbey all at once at this time. On June 23, the country will vote in a referendum to decide whether they remain as a part of European Union or if it wont be deemed as natural and easy for labels like the 95-year-old Florentine brand to travel to and from London to work. Michele addressed the front row saying at the end of the show, “You are part of the culture of Europe”; a poignant reminder of the longstanding influence European fashion and art has had on the British and vice versa. His comments come just days after he spoke of the importance of London to his creative muse.
