Just when it looked like we weren’t going to see any new music from Taylor Swift in 2016, she’s dropped a surprise release with Zayn Malik.
The two uber-popular artists have collaborated on the theme song to Fifty Shades Darker, one of 2017’s most hyped films (the movie’s first trailer broke the record for the most viewed in 24 hours).
This strongly mixed popularity cocktail worked: the breathy, slow-jam track titled I Don’t Wanna Live Forever was number one on the US iTunes chart within an hour of its release.
Taylor used her squad connection for this one: Zayn is obviously the boyfriend of her close friend Gigi Hadid, and she wrote it with hip-hop songwriter Sam Dew and Jack Antonoff, the boyfriend of Lena Dunham, another member of her inner circle.
Unless Taylor has another release scheduled in the next few weeks, it’ll be her one and only new song for 2016. While it was later revealed that she wrote ex-boyfriend Calvin Harris’ This Is What You Came For and also Better Man for country music outfit Little Big Town (believe to be a subtle revenge track directed at Harris), those weren’t quite enough to satisfy her fan base who have been patiently waiting for a new album since 2014’s 1989.
But she’s had a big year on a personal level and is no doubt overflowing with material, so it’s unlikely we’ll see the end of 2017 without another collection of tracks from Taylor.
