Bella Hadid was always a little reserved, or “sensitive” as she describes herself. The over exposed, every-move-on-social-media life of a famous woman wasn’t on her list of dreams. “I used to get so nervous doing interviews. I’m a very sensitive person,” the 20-year-old model told Porter magazine. “I think I’ve gotten more used to being around people. [The attention] gets really overwhelming. You feel really overexposed and you don’t want to see anybody… I just want to be in my apartment alone and kind of retreat and be centred again.”

The sister of Gigi Hadid and the ex-girlfriend of The Weeknd only add to that uncomfortable attention which is why it’s rare for the youngest Hadid sister to really open up in interviews.

Her father, real estate mogul Mohamed Hadid, was born in Nazareth and lived in Syria and Lebanon before moving to the United States as a refugee when he was 14 years old. In support of their father, Gigi and Bella were both spotted marching in protest of President Donald Trump’s Muslim ban in February. “My dad was a refugee when he first came to America, so it’s actually very close to home for my sister and brother and me,” explained Hadid. “He was always religious, and he always prayed with us. I am proud to be a Muslim.”
