Fresh off her honeymoon, Margot Robbie looked ever the golden girl in her first red carpet appearance since her Byron Bay wedding last year. Out presenting her friend and make-up artist, Pati Dubroff with the Marie Claire Image Makers Icon award, Robbie’s make-up was beyond perfection on the night, naturally. Teaming a black, leather Valentino ensemble with beach tousled hair, it was the Australian actresses’ smudgy, lower eyeliner that has us re-thinking the 90’s make-up trend. Dubroff took to Instagram to fill us in on on how she created her client’s look for the night, throwing some subtle shade at the popular multi-layered make-up that has gained popularity on Instagram in the process.

Captioning a close-up picture of the Suicide Squad star, Dubroff said“To define margot’s eyes i first used a black pencil on the upper and lower waterline, then smudged black pencil along the lower lashline , on top of that i added a healthy dose of bright electric blue pencil to add a pop of subtle color, a touch of highlight on center of lid, and tons of mascara.. Nude gloss and healthy tanned skin #motd ? #noretouch #nofacetune ? THIS is how COOL GIRLS like their makeup (not the thick “beatdown” face!!!)”

With it’s universally flattering appeal, blue eyeliner suddenly seems like the perfect palette cleanser for your mid-summer make-up routine. Whether you work navy like Robbie, or opt for a brighter hue as we have just seen slicked below actress Shay Mitchell’s, think about brightening your eyes with blue and playing down your base like a “COOL girl,” asap.
