Though Switzerland is a nation decorated with a most mesmerising natural terrain, it’s impossible not to be equally impressed by the precision in its man-made infrastructure. Everything from having the most reliable train timetable in Europe to the impeccable delivery of a McDonald’s burger, is a noticeable reminder that the Swiss are always on the clock. Needless to say, such aptitude for punctuality precedes the nation, a residual of the fact that this is the home of the modern timepiece.
Zenith, a fine watch label that has operated since 1865, remains today a leader in the wristwatch sphere. Since a young French-Swiss watchmaker named Georges Favre-Jacot began crafting timepieces from his home in Le Loche, Neuchâtel, Switzerland, the brand has revolutionised the possibilities of time-keeping. In 1969, the company founded the El Primero automatic movement, the most precise form of to-the-second chronography that remains the world’s fastest still to this day.

Fundamental to Zenith’s practice is the balance of contemporary utility with modern design. The cohabitation of stoic materials like titanium with precious stones such as sapphire and quartz in current collections reflects this balance. The limited edition Defy Extreme Jungle is designed with Tiger’s Eye stone and vibrant green accents while using the most lightweight, robust case structure that can withstand harsh environments. The Defy Extreme Jungle also makes for the third and final instalment in the label’s 1/100th second chronograph series. This engineering technology, named El Primero 9004 Calibre, features a seconds hand that completes a full rotation every second, creating not only remarkably precise time but a visual chronological experience as well.
Additionally, the Defy Skyline collection has released a limited edition pink-hued watch to raise funds for the global initiative to find a cure for breast cancer. A portion of each sale of the 41mm pink-dial watch will go towards the Susan G Komen charity fund. This particular timepiece is also unique not only for its metallic, geometric design but also in its 1/10th of a second indicator – the latest in Zenith’s El Primero engineering innovation.

Next year Zenith watches will celebrate its 160th year anniversary, making it one of the oldest still-operating watch companies in the world. These generations of experience have resulted in timepieces worthy of their highly respected investment status and remain a nod to the Swiss-perfected time keeping that started it all.
